Career building today is all about biting off chewable chunks of activities that move you closer to how you want to live and work. You design these activities to build upon previous life and work activities, while keeping the vision of your preferred future uppermost in your mind.
Have you created a preferred future, or future vision, for yourself yet? If not, this is an excellent time to read or review the section E4. Big Picture, and to revisit the description in section B3.2. Having a Preferred Future or Vision on how to create a preferred future. If you aren't yet comfortable with the notion of a preferred future, you may become even more confused as we get into mid-term goals, short-term goals, and action plans.
Motivating Clients to Set Goals
In this section we assume that the youth you're working with have already begun to create preferred futures for themselves. and we move on from there. We are going to take a closer look at some proven ways you can help youth set goals, make plans and follow through on them. We're going to talk about building momentum, and then maintaining it.

A preferred future that remains up in the clouds, a pie in the sky fantasy, can never become a driving force. Painting a verbal picture of your preferred way to work and live will provide you with personal guidelines for planning and action. Every decision can be examined in light of this ideal picture: “Will the actions I am considering taking move me closer to, or further away from my preferred future?” As you work through this section, making goals and taking action toward them, you will also find yourself adding more details and definition to your own preferred future. Understanding the concepts presented in this section and practicing the exercises will help you understand/work with youth’s preferred futures, strengthen your driving force and help you to build momentum.

A number of topics are covered in this section. Either read the section in the order presented, or click on the topic of interest.
