Goal setting is a necessary planning step for almost anything. Somehow the incentive to take specific action towards the goals needs to be developed and maintained. Adopting goals that other people thrust upon you, lower the chances of taking action. So goals need to originate with each person's preferred future to foster the necessary commitment.
